Pet Spotlight/Case Study: Jackson’s Resistant Infection

Jackson is a 9-year-old, male neutered, Japanese Chin who has a long history of atopic dermatitis (environmental allergies) managed by Dr. Ho. At one point, Jackson’s allergies flared, and he developed a resistant staphylococcal bacterial infection.

Based off a skin culture, Jackson was started on a systemic and topical antibiotic for 30 days; however, Jackson’s infection never resolved. Since there were very few antibiotic options for Jackson, Jackson’s owner elected to try Phovia (fluorescent light therapy).

Jackson underwent four treatments over the next month in combination with a topical antibiotic. Approximately 50% of the infection resolved after the first treatment. With subsequent treatments, Jackson’s skin infection was completely resolved.

Phovia is a two-part system that uses an LED lamp along with a chromophore gel to produce multi-wavelength light energy that can penetrate and heal the skin. Length and frequency of treatment depends on the type of skin lesion.

In Jackson’s case, he had weekly treatments for one month to resolve his resistant infection. This therapy has been used successfully to treat non-healing wounds, infections, perianal fistulas, and interdigital furunculosis.
